Impressive performance by new captain Paramjit Singh and new opening batsman Karun Dubey enabled Orissa beat Assam by seven wickets on the last day of their three-day East Zone Ranji Trophy match at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack today.
This was Orissa’s sixth overall win in 74 matches in Ranji Trophy and fifth in 24 matches against Assam. Paramjit bagged six wickets as Assam were bowled out for 105 after they chose to bat first. In reply, host Orissa made 164 to take a first-innings lead of 59 runs. Karun Dubey (40), Anil Bharadwaj (44) and Paramjit (25 not out) did the bulk of scoring for Orissa.
In the second innings, Assam were all out for 138 with Paramjit scalping five wickets and finishing with a match haul of 11 for 72 runs. Chasing 80 runs for victory, Orissa romped home comfortably, losing three wickets in the process. Dubey spearheaded the chase, scoring a half-century. He along with Anil Bharadwaj and Sudhir Pathak made first-class debut for Orissa in this match.
